Key Not Detected
"Key not detected", "no key detected" or "key not recognised" on the dashboard means the vehicle cannot communicate with the key it expects. Sometimes that is as simple as a flat key battery. Sometimes it is a damaged key, a failed transponder or an aerial/antenna fault in the car.
We diagnose the key side of the problem first, because that is usually where the fault sits and it is the cheapest thing to rule out.
- Key not recognised warnings
- Key not detected messages on start-up
- Car cranking but not starting
- Remote working intermittently
- Immobiliser communication problems
- Key diagnosis and replacement where required

Try this first
Most keyless vehicles have an emergency start position — often holding the key fob against the start button or a marked point on the steering column. Your handbook will show it. If the car starts that way, the key battery or key transmitter is the likely culprit.
When the key is at fault
Dropped keys, water damage and worn internal contacts all cause intermittent detection. We can test the key and, where it is beyond repair, supply and program a replacement at your vehicle.
When the car is at fault
If a known-good key is also not detected, the problem may be in the vehicle's receiver or wiring. We will tell you if that is what we find rather than selling you a key that will not fix it.
Key Not Detected FAQs
Can you help if my car says key not detected?
Yes. We diagnose whether the fault is in the key or in the vehicle, and supply and program a replacement key where the key is the cause.
Could it just be the battery?
Often, yes — a flat fob battery is the single most common cause. It is worth trying a fresh battery before booking anything.
Will you know before you arrive?
Not with certainty. We can narrow it down from the symptoms you describe, then confirm at the vehicle.
