Ignition Problems
An ignition that will not turn is rarely sudden — it usually stiffens over months as the key and the barrel wear against each other, until one morning the key simply will not move.
We look at both sides: the key and the barrel. Often the cheapest correct fix is a freshly cut key rather than a new ignition.
- Key won't turn in the ignition
- Ignition barrel problems
- Key stuck in the ignition
- Worn keys causing stiff operation
- Ignition diagnosis
- Replacement or repair where required

Before you call
Check the steering lock is not loaded — rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key. Check the car is fully in Park on an automatic. Those two account for a large share of "the key won't turn" calls.
Worn key or worn barrel
We can measure a key against the vehicle's original specification. If the key has worn down, a new one cut to code frequently restores normal operation without touching the barrel.
When the barrel needs work
Seized or collapsed barrels need repair or replacement. We will explain what is involved for your vehicle, including whether the new barrel will need to be keyed to your existing key.
Ignition Problems FAQs
My key won't turn at all — is the ignition broken?
Not necessarily. A loaded steering lock, an automatic not fully in Park, or a badly worn key are all common and cheaper causes.
The key is stuck in the ignition — what should I do?
Do not force or twist it hard, as a snapped key in the barrel makes the job significantly bigger. Call us and describe what happens when you turn it.
Can you replace an ignition barrel at my address?
It depends on the vehicle. We will assess it and tell you what can be done on site.
